W: Excuse me, do you know how to get to the library? 

M: You see that teaching building ahead? Go past it and you will see the dinning building and the   

   library is on the right of it.

W: Don’t cut it too short on the sides and the back. Just cut a little.

M: I’m sorry, but I can’t find the book you lent me. I really feel bad about it. Let me buy you a  

   new one. 

W: No. Don’t be silly. I wouldn’t dream of letting you do that.

M: Mommy, when will we have dinner? I’m starving. 

W: Soon, honey. We have to wait for grandma and grandpa. 

M: Aren’t they in Canada for the World’s Exhibition? 

W: They were, but they will join us for dinner today.

M: Pardon me, do you have the time?  

W: It’s 8:05.  

M: Do you know when the bus for Dallas leaves?  

W: It will leave in 15 minutes. I’m taking that bus, too.

M: I’m glad you came. You’re welcome any time.  

W: Congratulations again on your promotion. You deserve it.

M: Thanks. I’ll see you on Monday at the office.  

W: OK. By the way, tell your wife she throws a great party.

M: I will. See you later.

W: May I see your tickets and passports, please, Mr. and Mrs. ...? 

M: Smith. Here they are. 

W: Would you put all your baggage on the scale, please?....Ah, thirty-eight kilos. 

M: Is that within the limit? 

W: Yes, we allow twenty kilos each. 

M: That’s lucky for us! 

W: Open your baggage, please. 

M: Sure.

W: All right. Thank you, sir. Have a nice flight!

M: Er ... I want to buy my wife a gift for her birthday, but I don’t know what she would like. 

W: How about an evening dress? These are all from Paris. 

M: No. She has very good taste in clothes. I don’t want to take the risk. 

W: What do you have in mind then? 

M: I’m thinking about jewelry or something valuable and not out of fashion. 

W: We’ve got beautiful jewelry here — rings, earrings and necklaces. Not much, but each one is  

   unique. If you’re interested, I can show you. Here we are. Well, what do you think? What   

   about this pair of diamond earrings?  

M: They are lovely, I must say. But can I take a look at that necklace? 

W: Which one? This one? 

M: No, no....The third one from the left....Yeah, that’s the one. 

W: This one is a masterpiece, and I’m sure your wife will love it. You can’t find a second one in  

   New York, and it only costs you three thousand six hundred dollars. You can either pay by  

   cheque or in cash.

M: Three thousand six hundred? .... OK, I’ll take it.... My cash is not enough.... Here is the  

   cheque. Oh, please gift-wrap it.

W: Taxi! Taxi!  

M: Where to, miss? 

W: Diamond Hotel on Beach Avenue. How much do you think the fare will be? 

M: Well, about three dollars. I can’t tell exactly, but whatever it is, it will show on the meter. 

W: I took a taxi yesterday from the station to Diamond Hotel, and the driver charged me six  

   dollars. 

M: Was it rush hour? 

W: No, it wasn’t. 

M: Well, there is nothing I can say, miss. 

W: Do you think he intentionally drove all around instead of driving directly to Diamond Hotel? 

M: No. Why would he want to do that? 

W: For more money. He thought I was someone who can be taken advantage of. 

M: I wouldn’t say that, miss. Any cab driver would lose his license if he got caught doing a thing  

   like that. 

W: I didn’t know that. 

M: Now you know. Are you new in this city? 

W: Yes. I came here for a meeting at Greenland Center. I’ll probably stay here for two more  

   weeks. 

M: Here you are, Diamond Hotel. 

W: How much is it? 

M: Two dollars and fifty cents. 

W: Here is three dollars. Keep the change.

　 Dutch artist Hofman’s most well-known piece, Rubber Duck, stands more than 10 meters tall and has appeared in cities around the world. Hofman has “thrown” the Rubber Duck into some harbor cities. Last May his giant yellow duck received a warm welcome in Hong Kong. Millions of visitors from across Asia went to Victoria Harbor to see the duck and take pictures. Hong Kong business created duck-inspired products and dishes in honor of their yellow duck. And when Rubber Duck was ready to leave, thousands crowded at Victoria Harbor to wave a teary-eyed goodbye. In reality, there’s more than one Rubber Duck. Hofman uses local teams to build local models of the duck because he believes it makes repairs easier. Last fall one model was on a river in Pittsburgh while another one was in Kaohsiung! The Pittsburgh model was 12 meters, but the Kaohsiung one stands 18 meters tall.

　 Most of Hofman’s other works are big, too, like Fat Monkey, about 15-meter-long. In addition, Steelman is an 11-meter-tall bear sculpture to inspire the area’s youth to be tough like bears! 

   Hofman’s work appeals to all ages. Regarding Rubber Duck, Hofman believes it can help adults reduce anxiety. As he says, “The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!”
